3 DAYS IN EDINBURGH

Posted on: March 1, 2019 by Judith, Posted in: Travel Life

We love a mini break. It’s great to have a few days away to look forward to, treat yourself a little and get away from the mundane. Especially when the destination is beautiful Edinburgh.

LOCATION LOCATION

We headed north to visit the beautiful city of Edinburgh for a few days.

Is there a more gorgeous city?

St Stephen Street is just about the most perfect place you could wish to stay in Edinburgh. It’s convenient, attractive and accessible. It’s right at the heart of Stockbridge Village, and just 2 minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. And there’s free street parking all weekend.

STAYING WITH SAWDAY

We’re big fans of Sawday’s Special Places to Stay. We’ve been using their recommendations in the UK and Europe since our honeymoon in 2003. We’ve stayed with them in Portugal, Italy, all over France and many places in the UK. If you like to go a bit “off piste” and get away from the crowds, Sawday is for you.

As they say “life’s too short for ordinary”. Quite right.

Sawday “places to stay” are always fabulous,  “for people who love special” and this exceptional apartment ticked all our boxes.

ST STEPHEN’S STREET APARTMENT

The classic blue door sits between Mr Purves’ intriguing Light Emporium and Elaine’s quirky Vintage boutique. Quite a spot. Laura was there to meet us on arrival and offer a warm Scottish welcome followed by a tour of the apartment. We really appreciated Laura’s helpful advice and her directions on where to park when the free parking ran out.

With fresh flowers in every room, the whole apartment was decorated beautifully and very in keeping with the Georgian design.  The light and bright sitting room overlooks the quiet street giving lovely morning sun and an elegant place to relax.

The kitchen is bijoux and perfectly appointed. It included chilled prosecco, fresh coffee and shortbreads, and a pint of milk. Very thoughtful. We stayed just a few days so ate out in the local restaurants but eating in would have been nice too – at the window table in the sitting room.

The apartment sleeps 4 so we took the main double room, and there was a pretty twin room too. The bedroom was my favourite in the late afternoon with warm sun pouring onto the white washed walls and crisp cotton sheets. The trees behind the apartment ensured a morning chorus of birdsong – something you don’t always expect in the city.

The apartment is minimum 2 nights and it’s available from £95/night

THINGS TO DO IN STOCKBRIDGE

One of the treats of staying in St Stephen Street for a blogger is the photographic opportunities. We were right next to Circus Lane – the most instagrammed street in Edinburgh and it was easy to see why.  We enjoyed the numerous artisan coffee shops and bakeries, the excellent Farmers Market and 3 lovely restaurants including the Scran and Scallie, Tom Kitchin’s award winning bistro.

Thing we will remember (and come back for):

  • the Swedish cinnamon buns at Soderberg
  • the cocktails at the Raeburn
  • the pretty walk along the river to Dean Village
  • the awesome lunch in Hendersons of Edinburgh
  • the raspberry cheesecake at Scran and Scallie
  • the friendliness of Scottish folk.

We’ll definitely be back for more Edinburgh life, and we’d love to stay in St Stephen Street again. It was just lovely.

Happy Days
