As we approached the long tree-lined drive, edged with frosted lawns and winter shrubs, and catch a glimpse of the breath-taking views across rolling parklands and gardens – it was easy to see why Denise & James chose this stunning setting for their perfect winter wedding.
New Year’s Eve has always had special meaning for them so what better day to invite all their family and friends, have their beautiful wedding, and see in the New Year with a dusting of magic and sparkle!
Denise is a lady after my own heart – she’s a planner with organisation running through her veins. Working with her was easy, stress-free and lots of fun. We met a few months ago in the St George Hotel on Llandudno promenade, and chatted “all things cake” with our diaries, ipads and laptops open across the table sipping our cappuccinos. It soon became clear that no detail of this wedding was to be left to chance – Denise approached her wedding with the perfect blend of super-efficient organisation and relaxed happy anticipation – which has made her a very happy bride.
Delivering a wedding cake that you have spent hours planning, baking, decorating and fussing over is quite a unique moment. The anxiety and nervousness generated by actually having to move a 3 tier fully decorated very heavy cake, reaches fever pitch as you crawl slowly and cautiously along the road planning your route to avoid speed bumps, hills, hairpin bends, schools, busy town centres, and pretty much everything else. The relief when you arrive safely at your venue and finally place your cake in it’s designated spot is palpable, and the euphoria like nothing else!
Denise had chosen 3 deep tiers of sponge – raspberry madeira and chocolate orange – with a separate cutting cake to make sure there was a slice for every guest.
The base colours were ivory, mid grey and silver. The 10″, 8″ and 6″ round tiers were covered in Renshaw Celebration Sugarpaste and set on 2 covered boards atop a silver beaded cake stand.
The main design was quite simple …. tiny blossoms in ivory and grey centred with little silver and ivory balls. I piped with royal icing larger blossom shapes around the cake in an asymmetrical cascading pattern finishing with the board. I accented the pattern with tiny piped beads to reflect the silver balls.
The finished cake was a nice mix of modern contemporary understated style, with a romantic twist. When I stood back, I could see the dovetailing of all Denise’s meticulous planning – no detail was wasted – and everything melded together to create a magical winter scene.
The stunning Welsh dresser, panoramic mirror, lit branches and twinkling hearts set the scene perfectly and I was delighted with the result.
I’m really not a professional photographer at all, but couldn’t resist spending a few moments taking in some of the lovely details all around the rooms.
Denise & James especially wanted to wait until their evening reception to cut the cake so that all their guests could enjoy seeing it – how nice. What a gorgeous couple!
If you’ve never visited Caer Rhun Hall, you should call next time you are driving from Conwy toward Rowen. It’s a stunning 3 storey late Victorian mansion style house with Elizabethan influence, beautiful gardens just a stone’s-throw from the A470. It was built by General Hugh Gough in 1892 of rustic dressed pale grey limestone with red sandstone window surrounds and chimneys.
For me it was a special wedding. Jim, as I know him, has been incredibly supportive of my little cake business right from the start – spreading the word and enthusing about my cakes at corporate events that I had done in the town and with the Local Authority. When he asked me if I could do their wedding cake at New Year, and then introduced me to Denise, I was thrilled to have a way of saying thank you.
