Last week, my cake challenge was to make teeny, tiny vegetables out of marzipan. My customer particularly asked for marzipan as the birthday boy, Jack, prefers the taste to fondant. And who can blame him – after all, marzipan is made mostly of almond and is practically one of your 5 a day!
But I didn’t just stop at 5….. I made 9 types of delicious vegetables. There were potatoes, carrots, cauliflowers, red and purple cabbages, swede, pumpkin, leek and aubergine. The marzipan was great to work with – soft and malleable, easy to colour, and perfect for shaping into tiny veggies.
The star of the show, though was my John Deere Tractor carefully shaped from modelling fondant to reflect the exacting specifications of my 13 year old customer. Green and yellow with a matching trailer over-spilling with delicious farm produce.
The cake, in case you’re wondering, was a 10″ square madeira sponge filled with a triple layer of vanilla buttercream and jam. Delicious! So all in all – it’s really a 3 course balanced meal!
