Hands up if you remember this song made world famous by Sinead O’Connor back in 1990. I remember it well as the theme tune of my first year at University.
But I’ve changed the words slightly.
A few weeks before Christmas, North Walians woke to the tragic news that Bodnant Welsh Food had gone into administration and was up for sale, after 6 years of trading and a long history of struggles.
Thank goodness for the Reynolds family who swept in to save it from the brink. Ever since this news, we’ve been on the edge of our seats wondering when it will open and what they’ll do with the place.
Finally we are able to say “Hello again” to a North Wales favourite, as they official open to the public on a sunny Saturday morning
The clue’s in the name. If you’ve never visited Bodnant Welsh Food – it’s all about the food. Welsh food, mainly. A lot of it sourced very locally.
The word has obviously got round. It’s buzzing. We arrived about 11.30 to a packed car park, climbing wall and archery set up in the grounds, and the smell of freshly barbecued burgers drifting through the trees.
The place is stuffed full of couples sharing coffee and filling their baskets in the Farm Shop, families checking out the activities and dogs sniffing round the burger stand hoping for something meaty to fall.
The Furnace is open every morning from 9am for breakfast and morning coffee. Homemade maple pancakes, Eggs Benedict or the Full Furnace Breakfast. Whatever takes your fancy. It’s all local and homemade.
For lunch you can watch your pizza being freshly prepared or enjoy a range of fresh sandwiches and salads.
The memories of mediocre coffee and poor service are long gone, replaced by a host of friendly staff bustling round the refurbished tables with plates of freshly baked cakes and delicious lunches.
If you’ve never tried the famous (and quite ginormous) Bodnant Bun, that’s a good place to start – but I might suggest sharing!
The fresh white and sage green decor perfectly frames picture windows overlooking the Conwy River and mountains on one side and the stone courtyard with outdoor tables on the other.
Once you’ve had your coffee it’s time for a jaunt round the Farm Shop.
The first delight is the doorway full of gorgeous blooms from Lunaflower. Purple tulips, pink gerberas, white hydrangeas, blush roses and daffodils galore. It’s very hard to go home without an armful of fresh flowers for your kitchen table.
You can fill your basket with locally grown veg, pies and pasties, award winning cheeses, artisan flour, and delicious cakes and bakes. Chocoholics beware – there’s more locally made artisan chocolate that you could dream of.
For the meat lovers among you the Butchery is as full to bursting with all the special quality cuts we’ve grown to expect. Sourced locally, of course.
I was pleased to spot my favourite Cole & Co soaps and creams, handmade on Anglesey. A great new addition to the Bodnant offering.
Coffee at The Bakery is something new. You can perch on a stool and enjoy a freshly ground cuppa, while drinking in the heady smell of oven fresh bread, and munching on an almond croissant or choux bun. The perfect pick me up while you decide what else to add to your basket
We made it out with a bunch of root veg including an onion the size of my head, 2 almond croissants for an afternoon treat, and a dinner plate sized freshly baked focaccia. All supremely delicious.
I asked Mr Bond what was his highlight of the day. Seeing the place “alive and happy”, he said
I agree. It’s been a long time since Bodnant has felt “happy”. Today that happiness is back. Long may it stay.
