This was a first for me. A Raccoon cake.
Isn’t he cute? His round fluffy face and bushy tale.
Only apparently they’re quite fearsome – known as the American Bandit. They grow to the size of a small dog but are a closer relative to the bear family.
The 30th President of the United States, President Coolidge and his wife kept a raccoon as a pet, and named it Rebecca. I wonder how that went – they’re quite happy in human company when they’re young but as they grow they become very aggressive and can attack humans. Who knew there was once an aggressive and unpredictable wild animal in the White House?
Scientists have determined that they can make over 51 different sounds! They purr, whistle, growl, hiss, scream and even whinny, and their hands are so dextrous they can tie up your shoes, unlatch a cage and remove coins from your shirt pocket
They have a good IQ – higher than cats and just below monkeys, and can run up to 15 miles per hour with hind feet that rotate a full 180 degrees to allow them to run down trees head first.
We loved the simplicity of this cake. Lara’s favourite colour was pale purple, so we tinted the sugar paste purple and added polka dots to match the red of the toadstools.
It’s modern and really fun – and was enjoyed by Lara and her friends to celebrate her birthday.
Novelty cakes are really fun to make and you can see our other creations on our Celebration Gallery.
