There’s something very decadent about dipping into a bowl of deep red, ripe, plump cherries.

Cherries are not an ordinary fruit – they are not for lunch boxes, or casual snacks, not to be chewed on at the bus stop, or crammed into a rucksack for a visit to the Zoo.

Cherries are more at home at a sumptuous summer picnic in a wildflower meadow on a warm July afternoon, or cascading over a sparkling crystal dessert bowl at a dinner party with a glass Catalan Cava, or even carefully baked into a delicious short crust cherry pie freshly baked and served hot with crème anglaise….

Henry VIII did not bring us this noble fruit by royal order – the Prunus Avium, the Sweet Wild Cherry –  so it could sit beside the blackening Bananas and sorry Satsumas in our kitchen fruit bowl. Oh no …..

We must pay homage to this splendid fruit, the French cerise, the Spanish cereza, –  by setting it atop a perfectly baked soft and fluffy cupcake, resting on a creamy swirl of light lemon buttercream, dressed in a robe of sweet sugar crystals.

“Life is just a bowl of cherries” we say …… a phrase the Oxford Dictionary defines as

“a very pleasant or enjoyable situation or experience”

But of course in our sardonic English language we so often turn this phrase around and use it ironically to mean the complete opposite.

It seems to me, as a humble appreciator of the magnificent cherry, that if we had our cherries on top of a cakes, instead of in a bowl, it changes everything and gives us that great expression “The Cherry on the Cake”, or in the more romantic French tongue “La cerise sur le gateau”, meaning

A desirable feature perceived as the finishing touch to something that is already very good”

“The final thing that makes something perfect”

With all this talk of cherries, perhaps we should join in with that 1931 hit song, part of the soundtrack to the Great Depression and not a bad way to finish my thoughts for today ….

Life is just a bowl of cherries
Don’t take it serious, it’s too mysterious
You work, you save, you worry so
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go

So keep repeating it’s the berries
The strongest oak must fall
The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries
So live and laugh at it all

Happy Days …..
