What a lovely time we had down at Hafod Farm and the perfect start to the Christmas season.
The holly was bursting with berries in the hedgerows, and the ivy creeping up the rustic gateposts. As the sun was setting on the Conwy valley, the mountain peaks fading to dusk, and the darkness bringing it’s evening chill, our little band gathered in the cosy Barn to get ready for an evening to remember.
After supplying cupcakes for the Opening Night of Petticoat Lane Interiors, also at Hafod Farm, it was a joy to be asked to join in with ‘Annie Sloan Late’, a charity fundraiser for NSPCC. Ably organised by Kate Russell, and fabulously hosted by Pete & Joanne, owners of the Farm, a splendid night was had by all.
The children were fascinated with craft demonstrations and fun activities that they could join in with. Linda Rousell, with her gorgeous handcrafted felt decorations, was a special attraction for the little girls. Becky Rigby was there with her beautiful homemade children’s clothes; Patrick Joseph, a specialist tailor of bespoke clothes and home furnishings and Donna Wyn Jones, a talented designer of Welsh and English greetings cards.
I baked 4 special seasonal flavours: spiced cinnamon; gingerbread; vanilla bean and chocolate orange and sold them wrapped individually, in pretty selection boxes; or pick and mix boxes.
My hand cut fondant toppers were themed with stars, snowflakes, trees and reindeers and looked festive atop a generous swirl of flavoured buttercream.
My cakes are mostly bespoke occasion cakes, so I don’t often get the chance to see folk enjoying eating them. But it was lovely tonight to have excited children queuing up for their favourite flavour and devouring them with delight in front of my eyes. This is a kind of job-satisfaction that is new to me, and it gives me great delight to make people happy in this way.
The Vanilla Bean was the most popular flavour with a pretty snowflake decoration, and I was pleased that the remainder of boxes could be sold in Petticoat Lane, Llandudno, over the weekend, with the proceeds donated to NSPCC.
Pete & Joanne were warm and welcoming hosts keeping us supplied with hot coffee, spiced mulled wine and Joanne’s yummy homebaked treats, which went some way to keep us warm on a very chilly winter’s night.
If you were a part of Annie Sloan Late, I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as my husband and I did, and I’d love to know which was your favourite flavour cupcake!
These kind of events are really helpful to raise the profile of small businesses in our area and big thanks to Kate, Pete and Joanne for inviting us and for looking after us so well.
Meanwhile, enjoy ‘the Holly and the Ivy’, the ‘Jingle Bells’ and the tiny chance of a ‘White Christmas’, treasure the things that bring you joy at the time we celebrate “God with Us”.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14)

It was great to meet some new faces too so if you’re on Facebook or Twitter you need to look up these lovely people, and say “hi” from me.
