Listen carefully. Not all piping bags are created equal.
When you decorate as many cupcakes as I do, you realised this quite quickly.
When I first started decorating cakes, I tried all sorts of ghastly piping bags. Some were too thin and split. Others were too thick to pipe properly. Many were too slidey to keep hold of. Some were too small, or too big. You get the idea.
These days I head straight to my nearest Lakeland shop in Chester and stock up on their Get a Grip Non Slip Disposable Piping Bags (50). They’re the best I’ve found and good value too.
You’ll pay £9.99 for a roll of 50 piping bags, that’s 19p each, which isn’t bad at all. If you shop in Lakeland you’ll know they’re always handing out vouchers so you’ll get discounts if you’re a regular customer.
I’ve noticed that the Lakeland Cake Decorating range has grown over the past few years. You can now get a wide range of sprinkles and toppers, cake stands, colouring, gift boxes, icing, piping sets and an ever expanding choice of cutter and moulds.
I pipe buttercream onto more cupcakes that you could imagine so the large non slip bags work well for me. Some brands just offer a roll of 10 or less which lasts no time in my kitchen.
Disposable bags are a must when you’re dealing with messy, sticky buttercream. It’s so easy just to cute the nozzle off and throw the used bag in the bin.
They’re a very pleasing shade of blue and they’re 23 x 45cm so big enough to pipe a large batch of cupcakes. The inside of the bag is smooth and the outside has a textured non slip finish – easy to manage with sticky hands.
Just tear the bag off the roll, snip off the end of the bag an insert your chosen piping nozzle. My favourite is the Wilton 1M for the perfect cupcake swirl. You can buy individual nozzles in Lakeland, or a set if you’re planning to get serious.
Also, and I’ve never tried this, but they are safe for hot food too. So you can pipe mashed potato and make your cottage pie look like a work of art.
I bought this product myself with my own money. It was not gifted and I have not worked with Lakeland before.
