THE LITTLE KIND THINGS

x1

I’ve been reminded in the last few days about the little things.

So much of the time we crash through life rushing to get things done, completing assignments, meeting deadlines and ticking jobs off lists. We’re going at such a pace that we often miss the little things – the opportunity to stop and chat to a friend, taking the time to visit someone who’s struggling, and thinking of little ways we can show kindness to the folk around us. The truth for me is that I’m often so wrapped up in my own life that I don’t look up to see what the people around me are going through. When we neglect to take an interest in others and miss that moment when we could have done something kind, we are all the poorer for it.

In my little world, I try to show intentional acts of kindness in the form of sweet things. If I have an over bake, I’ll think of someone who needs some ‘cakey love’ and deliver a little box of cakes to their door. And I must say that there aren’t many folk who can resist a smile when presented with an unexpected sugary treat.

This year, armed with a shiny new set of Lakeland Cookie Cutters, and a pile of festive bags and ribbons, I set about baking gingerbread snowflakes for my neighbours.

Thank you Peggy Porshen for your delicious Gingerbread recipe which was a treat to make and filled my kitchen with the irresistible aroma of Christmas spices. My snowflakes were decorated with piped royal icing and little silver balls, and then bagged up using pretty cellophane wrapping and a festive gift bag.

We are very blessed to have made real friends in our neighbourhood. Living on the Great Orme in Llandudno brings with it the great honour of becoming an “Ormite” and this year we’ve been delighted to welcome 3 new families to our little community.

My challenge to you this season is think of someone you care about and intentionally do something kind. There’s a proverb in the Bible that rings true for all of us:

‘Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness and honour’ Proverbs 21: 21

The little kind things won’t fix everything in this life, but they’ll go a long way to honour the people around us and to help us appreciate what life is really about.

Christmas is the perfect time to show kindness for no reason. It’s the time we celebrate the appearing of “the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour” (Titus 3:4) in the incarnation of Christ.

Winnie the Pooh said many great things, so perhaps we should take a leaf out of his book, and make life in the Hundred Acre Wood a little nicer.

“Just because an animal is large, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo”

Once you’ve bought gifts for your family and friends, think of ways you can surprise someone with an unexpected Christmas treat.

Happy Christmas

Love, Judith x
